A 53-year-old man living in Zhejiang, named Liang, was unaware of a massive tumor weighing 2.7 kg and measuring 20 cm in diameter in his chest until he experienced symptoms of chest tightness and fatigue two months ago. After seeking medical examination at Ningbo No. 2 Hospital, doctors discovered the mediastinal tumor that was pressing on his heart, aorta, and esophagus. Further tests revealed it to be a low-grade malignant liposarcoma tumor with a positive prognosis but not sensitive to radiotherapy.

Dr. Duong Minh Loi, Deputy Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Ningba No. 2 Hospital, reviewed Mr. Liang’s medical records and determined that surgery was the only option to remove the tumor. The large size of the tumor posed risks of fatal hemorrhage or damage to the esophagus, but the surgical team successfully removed the tumor after a five-hour surgery. Mr. Liang recovered well and was discharged after 11 days.

Dr. Duong emphasized the importance of regular medical examinations and early diagnosis as the mediastinal tumor went undetected for so long due to its location and slow growth. He highlighted the significance of CT scans for accurate detection of mediastinal tumors and urged individuals to prioritize screenings for early detection and treatment of cancer.

Regular examinations can help prevent complications from undiagnosed tumors in densely covered areas like the mediastinum where symptoms may not be apparent until the tumor has grown extensively.

In conclusion, early detection is crucial for successful treatment of cancerous diseases like liposarcoma in densely covered areas like the mediastinum where symptoms may not be apparent until late stages. Regular medical examinations including CT scans are necessary to detect such tumors early on when they are still treatable with surgery or other forms of radiation therapy.

As Dr. Duong stated, “The importance cannot be overstated when it comes to regular medical examinations and early diagnosis.”
