BD, a global medical technology company with a manufacturing facility in Sandy, Utah, has been partnering with Rocky Mountain Power’s Wattsmart Business® program for over two decades to support their energy-saving efforts. This program helps companies like BD identify ways to reduce energy usage through equipment upgrades and changes in behavior, while also offering incentives to help offset some of the costs.

BD has implemented various energy-efficient upgrades in recent years with the assistance of experts at Cascade Energy. For example, they upgraded their UV ovens used for sterilization with newer, more energy-efficient models that use LED technology to reduce energy consumption and heat output. This upgrade enabled them to remove energy-consuming heat exhaust fans as well. As a result of this project, BD received a substantial incentive of over $55,000 and reduced their annual energy consumption by more than 545,000 kilowatt-hours. This reduction is equivalent to charging over 25 million cellphones according to the EPA Greenhouse Gas Calculator.

According to Eric Wells, the associate director of corporate facilities at BD Sandy, the program has encouraged the company to think beyond traditional equipment replacements and make upgrades with a specific purpose in mind. “We’re always looking for ways to be more efficient and sustainable in our operations,” he said. “The Wattsmart Business® program has been instrumental in helping us achieve these goals.”
