Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is set to present a controversial bill today that seeks to ban transgender athletes from joining female sports teams at county-owned facilities. The proposed legislation comes after Blakeman attempted to implement the ban through an executive order in February, which was rejected by the Nassau County Supreme Court.

The court ruled that Blakeman did not have the authority to issue the order and that it was unlawful for him to enforce such a ban without proper authorization. The majority GOP legislature is expected to approve the new bill, making it official county law.

The judge’s 13-page decision highlighted that Blakeman’s executive order specifically targeted transgender women from participating in female athletics in county parks without legislative backing. This prompted criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates and civil rights groups who called it discriminatory and unconstitutional.
