The French film Beating Hearts (L’Amour Ouf) directed by Gilles Lellouche premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. This competition entry from Studiocanal received a 15-minute standing ovation inside the Grand Théâtre Lumière.
Beating Hearts is a modern adaptation of the classic Romeo and Juliet tale starring François Civil and Adèle Exarchopoulos. The story follows two childhood sweethearts from different backgrounds who reunite after years of separation due to gang violence and false murder charges.
The film also features Raphaël Quenard, Benoît Poelvoorde, Elodie Bouchez, Vincent Lacoste, Alain Chabat, and Jean-Pascal Zadi. Set against the backdrop of Dublin’s tough suburb of Ballyfermot in the 1980s, this gritty love story has been adapted from Irish writer Neville Thompson’s novel Jackie Loves Johnser OK?.
Lellouche co-wrote the screenplay with Ahmed Hamidi and Audrey Diwan, who were his collaborators on the 2018 comedy Sink Or Swim. The director expressed his admiration for the original story and how he fell in love with the idea of a violent love story. Beating Hearts is set to be released in France by Studiocanal on October 16th.
