On Saturday, North Korea once again sent balloons filled with waste to South Korea. The South Korean military reported the incident and urged the population not to touch the balloons and to report any sightings to the authorities. Last week, North Korea retaliated against South Korean activists who were sending balloons filled with propaganda towards them by sending hundreds of hot air balloons filled with bags of waste towards South Korea. Despite North Korea’s initial announcement that they would stop these actions on June 2, South Korean activists continued to send balloons containing leaflets and other items into North Korea.
One defector group even sent balloons containing leaflets, radios, and USB sticks with South Korean content towards North Korea. Another group issued a statement saying they would not stop their campaign regardless of North Korea’s actions. These actions have heightened tensions between South Korea and North Korea as both sides continue to engage in provocative behavior towards each other. The situation remains tense as both countries navigate their relationship and potential responses to these actions.
