The perception of Baker Mayfield’s underrated status is a matter of debate. Some argue that he is inconsistent and relies on random plays to succeed in the NFL. However, during the 2023 season with the Buccaneers, Mayfield put up impressive stats that silenced his critics. He completed 412 passes out of 643 attempts for 4,731 yards, 34 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and a passer rating of 96.0. Furthermore, he showed efficiency in deep passes by completing 26 out of 84 attempts for 835 yards, 11 touchdowns, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 89.0.

The Bucs were impressed by Mayfield’s performance and offered him a new three-year, $100 million contract with $50 million guaranteed. Despite this recognition, some still believe that Mayfield is underrated and has the potential to be ranked among the top quarterbacks in the league.

Throughout the season under Dave Canales’ offensive system with the Buccaneers, Mayfield improved and established a strong connection with his receivers by completing 64 explosive passes. As he enters into the new offensive coordinator Liam Coen’s system in 2024, it will be interesting to see how he performs using McVay-style concepts.

Overall, Baker Mayfield’s performance during the past season showcased his talent as an NFL quarterback and may help dispel any doubts about his underrated status.
