In the recent four-nil victory of Leeds in the Championship play-off semifinal second leg, one man on the pitch went almost completely unnoticed – the referee. Jarred Gillett, Australia’s most successful official, has won their referee of the year award a record five times. Gillett has been part of the Select Group 1 referees in England for three years, primarily officiating Premier League matches.

Had referees of Gillett’s caliber been officiating Norwich games this season, they may not have been in the play-off final this Saturday – they may have already been promoted. Daniel Farke, Norwich’s manager, expressed frustration after the first leg at Carrow Road, mentioning 12 apology letters for offside goals not given and penalties not awarded. In that same game, Leeds had a goal disallowed due to an incorrect offside call.

Gillett’s performance drew criticism from some fans who felt that he missed crucial incidents during the match. However, others praised his decision-making skills and commended him for maintaining a high standard throughout the game. It is important to note that all officials have room for improvement and should continue to work on their skills to ensure fairness and consistency in their decisions.
