On Friday, the Houston Astros announced that they had decided to release first baseman José Abreu. Despite having signed a three-year contract worth $58.5 million in 2022, Abreu will still be owed over $30 million despite being let go. The team will have to absorb the cost of releasing Abreu.

Abreu’s time with the Astros has not been what the team had hoped for, as he had a career-low average of .237 in his first season with the team. Prior to joining Houston, Abreu had a much stronger showing with the Chicago White Sox in 2022, where he posted a .304 average.

Earlier in April, Abreu was sent down to the minors after a rough start to the season where he was only averaging .099. His performance has not improved, as he currently has a .124 average, a .361 OPS, and only two home runs. This season has been a struggle for the Cuban infielder and designated hitter.

With a 31-38 record, the Astros currently find themselves in third place in the AL West division. Their decision to part ways with Abreu is likely a move aimed at shaking up the team and improving their performance as they strive for more success in the remainder of the season.
