The Aspen School District recently received a rebate check totaling $33,342 from Black Hills Energy in recognition of their commitment to energy-saving upgrades. This was achieved through their active participation in the Black Hills Energy Small Business Direct Install Program, which aims to promote energy efficiency among businesses.

The Facilities Director of ASD, Joe Waneka, expressed his gratitude for the rebate and highlighted that the funds would be used to support the district’s ongoing efforts to enhance energy efficiency within its facilities. Waneka emphasized that this cycle of savings and reinvestment not only benefits the district financially but also supports their commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.

One of the main contributors to ASD’s eligibility for the rebate was the installation of a new boiler, which boasts an impressive 92% efficiency rating. In contrast, the previous boiler in use by the district operated at a significantly lower efficiency rate of 65%. Black Hills Energy offers various measures that qualify for rebates under the program, such as HVAC upgrades, weather stripping, pipe insulation, and boiler replacements.

Waneka highlighted that ASD plans to reinvest the rebate funds into acquiring more energy-efficient products, which could potentially make them eligible for additional rebates in the future. This cycle of savings and reinvestment supports their commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency while benefiting students by allowing them to focus on classroom programs and resources rather than worrying about high energy costs.
