Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan recently met with Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Vienna to discuss the safe and secure operation of Armenia’s nuclear power plant. During the meeting, Mirzoyan emphasized Armenia’s commitment to nuclear energy and its efforts to extend the life of the nuclear power plant until 2036 while exploring new opportunities. The discussions also touched on various projects in the energy and healthcare sectors, specifically in the fields of oncology and radiation medicine.
Mirzoyan expressed appreciation for the support and cooperation provided by the EAEU during the meeting. He also highlighted Armenia’s close cooperation with the IAEA to ensure nuclear safety and fulfill its obligations in this regard.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had previously emphasized at a Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels that nuclear energy is a vital component of Armenia’s strategy. He further highlighted concerns raised by Azerbaijan regarding the safety of the Metsamor nuclear power plant near its border, which was due to end its operation period soon. However, he also reiterated Armenia’s commitment to extending the life of its nuclear power plant while ensuring its safe operation in accordance with IAEA standards and recommendations.
