In 2023, the Argentine army is set to begin receiving upgraded 2CA2 tanks from Elbit Systems. These tanks were originally produced in collaboration with Germany in the late 1970s to early 1990s and are currently being revamped as part of a $30 million project that was approved by the Buenos Aires government in 2021. The project commenced in Argentina with Elbit Systems and local companies involved in its implementation.

Work on the tanks started in late 2023, with the final tank delivery expected by 2027. However, due to Argentina’s challenging economic situation, Javier Millay’s government may need to allocate additional funds to the project in the next two budget cycles (in 2025 and 2027). President Millay has hinted at an increase of another 50 units as part of the army’s enhancement efforts.

The tank upgrades include advanced technology from Elbit Systems and local partners such as IMPSA company. Technologies like E-Laws 360-degree laser-guided threat detection system and COAPS-L electro-optical sensing system have been integrated into the tanks to enhance their identification, intention, attack, and tracking capabilities. The tanks’ communication systems have also been upgraded, although there has been a delay in improving their protection. Options for additional protection from Israeli IMI company are under consideration for installation on the tanks.

In summary, this tank upgrade project led by Elbit Systems and local partners aims to enhance Argentina’s defense capabilities with cutting-edge technology. The delivery of upgraded tanks is expected to commence this year and continue through the next few years, signaling a significant advancement in Argentina’s defense capabilities.
