The Helsinki Hall, once known as the Hartwall Arena, remains closed despite a deadline to reopen it. According to Minister of Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen (Kok), who made the announcement on Monday, the EU has granted an exemption to Areena’s voluntary shops that is set to expire at the end of June.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received two exemption applications related to the sale of the arena, but they have not received the necessary documents confirming the sale of shares. Valtonen expressed concern about the lack of information and documentation needed to grant an exception permit within the timeframe. If a voluntary sale does not occur, the government is considering options such as selling or expropriating the rental right to the hall building. Special legislation may be required to address this issue quickly.
The fate of Helsinki Hall has been uncertain for some time now, with it being closed since February 2022 due to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Various interested parties have expressed interest in buying it, including a Finnish investor group and St1 owner Mika Anttonen. Valtonen emphasized how important it is for citizens to have access to this facility as soon as possible.
Valtonen also stressed that sanctions legislation must be followed if any potential sale occurs, which could complicate matters if sellers do not cooperate. She urged all parties involved to work together towards resolving this issue promptly.
