One Dutch startup, Arctic Reflections, is leading the charge in this field. They have developed an experiment that involves pumping seawater onto strategically chosen locations in the Arctic Sea during the winter months. This process thickens the ice, creating a protective layer over the snow that can help sustain the Arctic until larger scale environmental changes are implemented.
The CEO of Arctic Reflections drew inspiration from Dutch ice rink makers who flood fields to create ice rinks. However, these projects may only offer temporary solutions and cannot replace the need for global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Implementing geoengineering techniques like those being explored in the Arctic may provide short-term relief, but long-term solutions require significant changes to combat global warming. It is up to us all to take action and reduce our carbon footprint before it’s too late.
