Andy Murray’s 1,001st career match against Jordan Thompson at Queen’s marked his decision to stop playing when he was down 4-1 in the first set against Thompson. The three-time Grand Slam champion had expressed his desire to end his career either at Wimbledon or the Paris 2024 Olympics, but a back injury forced him to retire from the match just nine days before Wimbledon is set to start on July 1st.

Murray, who is 37 years old and a two-time Olympic gold medallist, is planning to undergo a procedure on his back on Saturday. His brother, Jamie Murray, mentioned that Andy saw a specialist to determine the next steps regarding his injury. It is unclear whether this setback will prevent Murray from participating in Wimbledon or the upcoming Olympics, which start on July 27th.

Fellow Briton Dan Evans also had to retire from his Queen’s opening match due to a knee injury. Evans underwent a scan to determine the extent of his injury. Both players are in a race against time to recover and be fit for their upcoming tournaments.
