The United States announced on Sunday that it had requested a vote by the UN Security Council on its draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The vote is scheduled for Monday, although it has not been confirmed by the South Korean presidency of the Council. The United States has faced criticism for blocking previous ceasefire resolutions in Gaza, but is now pushing for the adoption of its new proposal.

The American draft resolution supports a ceasefire plan presented by President Joe Biden, involving three phases to move towards lasting peace in Gaza. The third version of the text calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, withdrawal of the Israeli army, and entry of humanitarian aid. It also emphasizes the acceptance of the plan by Israel and calls on Hamas to do the same without delay.

Despite diplomatic reservations from some Council members, including France and China who expressed concerns over the lack of international oversight in implementing any ceasefire agreement, the United States is determined to secure support for its resolution. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to embark on a new tour of the Middle East to promote the ceasefire, starting in Egypt and moving to Israel. However, Benny Gantz’s resignation as Defense Minister could complicate diplomatic efforts as he was seen as a moderate voice among Israeli politicians who were willing to engage in dialogue with Hamas.
