After more than three years of construction, Amazon has finally opened its $200 million fulfillment center at the former Cortana Mall site. The facility, which is located at the intersection of Airline Highway and Florida Boulevard, was built to handle up to 1 million packages per day. More than 500 people have been hired to work at the center, with plans to have more than 1,000 people ultimately working at the facility.

The 3.4 million square foot building stands nearly 90 feet tall and houses storage, robots, and conveyors on the second through fifth floors. Employees work alongside Amazon robots to pick, pack, and ship small customer items such as books, electronics, toys, and housewares. However, unlike other Amazon fulfillment centers that ship packages directly to consumers, the Cortana facility will not do so. Instead, those packages will be sent to Amazon’s sortation center in Port Allen before being moved to a “delivery station” like its facilities off Siegen Lane or its Elmwood center in Jefferson Parish before reaching their final destination.

This second Amazon fulfillment center in Louisiana joins a Carencro facility that opened in 2021 and a Shreveport center set to open in August. All employees at the center will earn starting pay of $17.50 an hour and will have access to benefits like health care, dental, 401k, and paid parental leave once they begin working.
