During his visit to China, German Economic Affairs Minister Robert Habeck emphasized the importance of finding a safe alternative to coal in achieving global climate goals. He acknowledged China’s concerns about energy security, especially in light of recent events in Europe and Germany.

Habeck also stressed the importance of cooperation with China in tackling climate change, noting that without China’s participation, global climate targets would be difficult to achieve. He suggested that it should be possible for China to improve its energy security without relying heavily on coal-fired power plants.

During a discussion with students at Zhejiang University, Habeck addressed the challenges of integrating variable forms of energy such as wind and solar into the existing energy system. He advocated for a more efficient approach to expanding renewable energy capacity, highlighting China’s significant investment in renewable energy in recent years.

Habeck proposed the extension of the power grid and the use of energy storage solutions, such as batteries, as ways to reduce the reliance on traditional fuel-based power plants. He emphasized that economic growth and climate action are not mutually exclusive and that transitioning to a climate-neutral economy can create new opportunities for wealth and growth.
