Aaron Jones led team USA to a historic seven-wicket victory over Canada in the opening match of the T20 World Cup. The game took place at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas on Saturday. With Navneet Dhaliwal and Nicholas Kirton scoring half-centuries for Canada, Canada had set a target of 195 for USA to win.
The USA’s openers, Steven Taylor and Monank Patel, quickly fell but Jones partnered with Andries Gous to put on an impressive power-hitting display. Jones scored an unbeaten 94 from just 40 balls, including 10 sixes, while Gous added 65 runs to help USA achieve a perfect start to the tournament.
The match marked the beginning of the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup and was between two countries who played the first international match in 1844. Canada had won that low-scoring three-day game in New York by 23 runs. Cricket was once a popular sport in the United States, particularly in Philadelphia, before being replaced by baseball in the late 19th century.
The International Cricket Council has introduced T20 cricket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in an effort to attract a new and potentially lucrative audience. The current World Cup is being split between the Caribbean and the United States. Two-time champions West Indies will start their campaign against Papua New Guinea in Georgetown on Sunday, with the match being broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Every match of the Men’s T20 World Cup will be broadcast live on Sky Sports from June 2 to 29. England will face Scotland in Barbados on Tuesday while Ireland will play against India in New York on Wednesday
