The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, has been under investigation for alleged irregularities in the purchase of Pfizer vaccines against covid-19. The case revolves around the massive acquisition of vaccines during the pandemic involving billions of euros. Von der Leyen is under scrutiny for her refusal to disclose SMS exchanges with Pfizer’s head, Albert Bourla, about the vaccine purchase, leading to criticism for the Commission’s lack of transparency.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has been investigating these allegations since October 2022 and has maintained silence on von der Leyen’s role. In May 2023, EPPO received complaints filed in a Belgian court leading to further investigation. A court hearing was held where von der Leyen and Pfizer’s head were summoned, although only their lawyers attended. The case has now been postponed until December 6.

The timing of this decision means that no actions will be taken regarding the investigation until after the elections. The new team of commissioners may not have assumed their roles by the time of the next hearing. The current European Executive started its functions on December 1, 2019 and the new team is scheduled to begin on November 1st.

This suspension gives von der Leyen a protective shield amid her electoral campaign for the European People’s Party (EPP). Despite this, she remains under scrutiny for her actions during her tenure as president of the European Commission and whether she was responsible for any irregularities in vaccine procurement.

Overall, this decision marks a significant development in an ongoing investigation into one of Europe’s most powerful leaders. As von der Leyen continues her campaign for reelection, it remains to be seen what impact this suspension will have on her chances of maintaining leadership within Europe.
