In the southern region of Vietnam, Phu Yen is home to a rare and unique species of turtle – the Southern yellow-fronted box turtle. This turtle, which weighs around 1kg and has a light brown shell, is endemic to several provinces in Vietnam and Russia. One of its most notable features is that its bib can be completely closed with the shell, offering an added layer of protection.
Recent research conducted by Vietnamese and Russian scientists during a biodiversity conservation project in Phu Yen province revealed the existence of this critically endangered species. The Southern yellow-fronted box turtle belongs to the swamp turtle family and is one of several species that are unique to this region. Researchers note that this turtle’s plastron can be fully closed with the shell, making it distinguishable from other turtle species.
Unlike common turtles that retract their heads and legs into their shells, the Southern yellow-fronted box turtle has a unique ability to seal itself completely by retracting its head and legs and “closing the lid” of its shell. This feature makes them invulnerable as they leave no part of their body exposed, serving as a natural defense mechanism against predators.
Vietnam is home to over 25 species of turtles, including the critically endangered Southern yellow-fronted box turtle. Conservation efforts are critical to protect this species from habitat loss and hunting. Preserving their natural habitat, raising awareness about wildlife protection, and preventing illegal trade are essential steps to safeguarding their population for future generations to appreciate and admire.
