On Monday, the United Nations Security Council approved President Joe Biden’s proposal for a truce in Gaza. The resolution, formulated by Biden and announced on May 31, was passed with 14 votes in favor and Russia’s abstention. The second phase of the plan involves a permanent ceasefire and reconstruction plans for Gaza, with the distribution of humanitarian aid being emphasized.

Biden’s plan outlines three phases, including an initial six-month ceasefire, the release of hostages, withdrawal of Israeli forces, and return of civilians in Gaza. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Israel on Monday to reaffirm support for Biden’s truce proposal. The Security Council’s resolution reaffirms a commitment to a negotiated two-state solution and unification of the Gaza Strip with the West Bank under Palestinian Authority.

Israel has accepted the terms of the proposal, while Hamas has not yet responded. The resolution underscores the importance of peaceful coexistence between Israel and Palestine within secure borders. The approved plan highlights the steps needed for a lasting peace in the region.
