On Friday, a group of more than 60 World War II veterans from Dallas embarked on a journey to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The group, ranging in age from 96 to 107 years old, is being flown to Paris by American Airlines before heading to various locations in France for the commemoration.
Once in France, the veterans will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at Suresnes American Cemetery, visit the Eiffel Tower, and participate in the daily ceremony known as le Ravivage de la Flamme at the Arc de Triomphe to honor fallen French service members. They will then travel to the Normandy region for events including wreath-laying ceremonies on Omaha and Utah Beaches, significant landing sites for Allied forces on D-Day.
The journey is just one of several that are transporting veterans to France for the occasion. Despite their advanced age, fatigue, and physical challenges, the veterans are making the trans-Atlantic journey to honor their fellow servicemen and women who fought alongside them during World War II.
The group includes six Medal of Honor recipients from more recent wars as well as two Rosie the Riveters who symbolize the women who played crucial roles in factories and shipyards during WWII. These brave individuals sacrificed much to fight for freedom and democracy, and it is important that we never forget their contributions.
Philippe Étienne, chairman of Liberation Mission, emphasized this sentiment: “It is crucial that we recognize these heroes who made such incredible sacrifices for our freedom and show them our gratitude.” The veterans will have an opportunity to reflect on their experiences and pay tribute to their fallen comrades while they are abroad. This trip is not only about honoring our past but also about inspiring future generations with stories of bravery and sacrifice.
