For over a century, Saunders Hardware in Montclair has been a staple of the community. Customers have come to know Tom Vultee as the friendly face behind the register, always ready to help them find what they need. But after more than 40 years in the hardware business, it’s time for him to hang up his apron and retire.

Vultee has seen it all during his time at Saunders Hardware. He’s seen loyal customers come and go, some of whom have been shopping there for decades. It’s bittersweet for him to say goodbye, but he knows it’s time to move on. He reflects on the many memories he’s made working at the store and the friendships he’s formed with customers over the years.

The decision to sell was prompted by several factors, including challenging economic conditions such as COVID, high interest rates, and inflation. Vultee is past retirement age and feels it’s time for him and his wife to enjoy their golden years. The store is currently holding going-out-of-business sales starting at 30% off, with plans to gradually increase discounts as more inventory is sold. Any remaining items will likely be donated and the store will officially close once most of the inventory is gone. The building has been sold but there is no word yet on what will become of it.

As he looks forward to retirement, Vultee plans to spend time with his grandchildren and enjoy fishing. After a long career in hardware, he’s ready to begin this new chapter in his life. While Saunders Hardware may soon close its doors, its legacy will live on through Tom Vultee and all those who have worked there over the years.
