The European Council has called on Ursula von der Leyen, the Commission leader, to reduce administrative and regulatory burdens on companies and national authorities. Various bills and recommendations have been proposed on a regular basis, causing significant work in the European Parliament and the Council of Member States. Critics argue that while the amount of regulation has been high, the level of impact assessment and detail of regulation have also been points of contention.

During a summit meeting of EU country leaders last week, it was emphasized in the conclusions that the Commission should work to reduce administrative and regulatory burdens on companies and national authorities and avoid over-regulation. Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo believes that the general sentiment among heads of state is that the current commission has imposed excessive regulation, which has hindered growth rather than promoted it.

Orpo is of the opinion that these concerns need to be addressed by the Commission and that political decision-makers need to have their political will implemented by a strong Commission. He suggests that monitoring of this work needs to happen at summit meetings and requires vigilance from political decision-makers.
