The New York Yankees have claimed right-handed reliever Michael Tonkin off waivers from the Mets, allowing him to continue playing in New York. Tonkin, who has been designated for assignment three times this season, will bring some much-needed depth to the Yankees bullpen.
Tonkin started the season with the Mets but was eventually DFA’d and traded to the Minnesota Twins for cash considerations. He only appeared in one game for the Twins before being DFA’d again and picked up by the Mets. However, he made just two appearances before being DFA’d by the Mets once more.
Despite his struggles this season, Tonkin has a solid track record and could be a valuable addition to the Yankees roster. With a 6.00 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 9.0 innings over six appearances this year, Tonkin has had a challenging year. In order to add Tonkin to their roster, the Yankees designated right-handed pitcher McKinley Moore for assignment.
