Edmundo González Urrutia, a 74-year-old diplomat chosen as the opposition representative in the upcoming presidential elections in Venezuela, made his first public statement on Wednesday. In a video published on YouTube, he highlighted the challenges facing the country and his vision for overcoming them.

Urrutia emphasized the need to focus on Venezuela’s recovery in the face of increasing poverty, inflation, and devaluation of the currency. He promised a Venezuela where individuals are not persecuted for their ideas and pledged to work towards a transition that guarantees freedom for political prisoners, the return of exiles, and the independence of public authorities.

Drawing on his experience in diplomacy, Urrutia expressed his understanding of Venezuela’s role in a turbulent world filled with conflict. He acknowledged that his candidacy was unexpected but expressed his gratitude for the support of key figures like María Corina Machado and Manuel Rosales, who both played a role in making his candidacy possible.

Despite facing obstacles such as disqualifications and bans from the Maduro regime, Urrutia remains committed to his vision for a democratic and prosperous Venezuela. He emphasized the importance of unity within the opposition and his determination to lead the country towards a brighter future.
