In the upcoming fiscal year 2024, many local governments in Japan are taking bold steps to revitalize their economies. One such town is Nishikawa in Yamagata Prefecture, which has established a “kasegu,” or moneymaking, division. The primary goal of this new department is to secure additional financial resources for the town. To achieve this, Nishikawa is promoting a unique non-fungible token (NFT) that allows individuals living outside of the town to become digital citizens of Nishikawa.

Tomohiro Ishikawa, head of the division, expressed hope that the relationship with Nishikawa won’t be limited to just one NFT transaction. He wants people to take a further step and become fans of the town. To facilitate this, Nishikawa plans to host both in-person and online gatherings that bring together its digital citizens to engage and connect with each other.

Overall, it appears that local governments in Japan are thinking outside the box and utilizing innovative methods to stimulate their economies. This proactive approach could lead to exciting new opportunities for both residents and outsiders interested in becoming part of these unique communities.
