In a few weeks, 400 million European citizens will be heading to the polls to elect the new Parliament, marking a significant exercise in democracy. The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, expressed his hope for high participation in voting, emphasizing that citizens have the power to shape the future of the continent and the Union they are a part of. Speaking at the celebration of Slovenia’s twentieth anniversary of accession to the EU, Mattarella called on European institutions and governments to ensure that the Union plays a proactive role in international affairs, promoting peace, collaboration and stability.

Mattarella stressed that Europe and its member states must be more than mere spectators in global community; they must actively address events that may impact them. He urged governments to take incisive and courageous reforms postponed until after European Parliament elections. The upcoming elections present an opportunity for citizens to make their voices heard and contribute to a stronger, more influential European Union on the world stage.
