On World Earth Day 2023, Vodafone Group took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of mobile device recycling. The company aimed to shed light on the issue of 5 billion redundant phones estimated by the GSMA. By choosing a recycled device over a new one, customers could significantly reduce their carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions by around 50kg, resulting in a 20% decrease in climate impact. Furthermore, using recycled models eliminates the need to extract 70kg of raw materials needed to manufacture a new device.

As part of its sustainability efforts, Vodafone has implemented recycling programs for mobile devices. The operator showcased its partnership with the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2022, where they pledged to collect 1 million phones. They hope to increase the number of used models returned through various channels. Additionally, they highlighted partnerships with organizations like Recommerce and the success of their mobile phone recycling program in Germany, which has collected over 80 tonnes of electronic waste.

In addition to promoting recycling initiatives, Vodafone is also advocating for repair programs. Their Spanish unit fixed 100,000 handsets in 2023. World Earth Day, which began in 1970 with the aim of raising environmental awareness, now collaborates with over 150,000 partners to drive positive action for the planet. The company is committed to reducing the environmental impact of mobile devices through recycling and repair initiatives that align with the goals of World Earth Day.

By highlighting these initiatives during World Earth Day, Vodafone aims to raise awareness about the importance of mobile device recycling and encourage consumers to make more sustainable choices when it comes to their technology needs.
