The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has recently announced its list of the 2023 class of fellows, which includes 502 scientists, engineers, and innovators recognized for their scientific and social achievements. Among these distinguished individuals are University of Arizona professors Daniel Apai and Dante Lauretta, who were selected for their contributions in astronomy, planetary sciences, and astrobiology. Additionally, ASU professor Kaye Reed was recognized for her work in the study of human evolution.

Reed expressed her gratitude for the honor, stating that she was overwhelmed by the recognition and felt honored to be elected by her peers. Her work involves reconstructing paleoenvironments for hominin ancestors, focusing on studying the interaction between organisms and their environments.

According to Andrew Black from the science association, being named a fellow is a capstone achievement in one’s career. It recognizes the progress that an individual has made over time and is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious honors in the scientific community. The AAAS fellows program has a long history dating back to 1874 when the first class of fellows was named.

The selection process for AAAS fellows involves a rigorous review of nominations by peers within each field of study. Candidates must demonstrate exceptional scientific merit or leadership in their field as well as make significant contributions to society through their work. The new class of fellows will be formally inducted at an annual meeting held later this year.

Overall, this recognition highlights the importance of scientific research and innovation in shaping our understanding of the world around us. It also serves as an inspiration to aspiring scientists to pursue excellence in their own fields and make a positive impact on society through their work.
