Elon Musk has recently stated that Tesla requires a “complete organizational overhaul” to advance to the next level, following a round of mass layoffs that resulted in over 10% of the staff being let go. In his public post, Musk noted that such reorganizations are necessary for the company’s growth and that Tesla needs to undergo a significant overhaul every “half decade or so” to enable innovation and growth.

Tesla still maintains a strong workforce of over 140,000 employees worldwide, despite the recent layoffs. Musk’s memo to staff addressed rapid company growth, which had led to duplications in roles and job functions. While he expressed a distaste for layoffs, Musk emphasized the importance of streamlining operations to remain competitive in the industry. This recent restructuring coincided with the departure of two long-serving Tesla executives, further marking a pivotal moment for the company.

Tesla’s challenges include declining sales and increased competition, especially from Chinese automakers like BYD. Musk has acknowledged that Chinese car companies are particularly competitive and could potentially overshadow other global automobile manufacturers, given fewer trade barriers. Despite these difficulties, Tesla continues to navigate the evolving automotive landscape with a focus on innovation and adaptability.
