The Premier League has announced that it will implement semi-automated offside technology in the 2024/25 season, making it the third major top division to adopt this technology after Serie A and La Liga. This move will enhance the accuracy and efficiency of offside calls in the Premier League.
During a Premier League Shareholders’ meeting, clubs unanimously agreed to the introduction of Semi-Automated Offside Technology. This new system will be utilized for the first time in the Premier League next season, following the autumn international break. The technology will offer faster and consistent placement of the virtual offside line using optical player tracking, and improved broadcast graphics for supporters.
Officials in the Premier League will use the same cameras and software that UEFA uses in the men’s Champions League. This differs from the technology used during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the match ball contained a chip to provide data for decisions. UEFA will introduce chipped ball technology for the upcoming EURO 2024 Finals in Germany to enhance VAR decisions.
