The Mets have announced the addition of left-hander Tyler Jay to their roster, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Currently not on the 40-man roster, a corresponding move will need to be made by the team. He will be filling the 26-man roster spot previously held by Dedniel Nunez, who made his big league debut against the Braves on Tuesday and performed well, striking out three batters while allowing one run in two innings.
Nunez, however, is not available to pitch again after his recent workload, leading the Mets to call up Jay for fresh arms in the bullpen. The team’s bullpen had been in a state of flux recently, with Michael Tonkin and Yohan Ramirez being designated for assignment and traded. Jay, aged 29, will be making his MLB debut once he gets into a game.
Selected by the Minnesota Twins with the No. 6 pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, Jay has had a winding journey in his baseball career. He transitioned from a starter to a reliever after his time with the Twins and subsequent stints with the Cincinnati Reds and independent Frontier League’s Joliet Slammers. Jay spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Slammers before being signed by the Mets last August 25th.
