The Kazakh Prime Minister, Olzhas Bektenov, recently convened a meeting of the Supreme Board of Trustees of Nazarbayev University (NU), Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools, and the Nazarbayev Foundation. During the meeting, the Supreme Board of Trustees had the opportunity to learn about the state-of-the-art laboratories at NU and the latest scientific developments taking place there.

At the meeting, Dos Sarbassov, the general director of National Laboratory Astana (NLA), shared information about his team’s work on developing an effective cancer treatment. He reported encouraging results from initial phases 1 and 2 studies of the drug. Additionally, Ainur Akilzhanova, acting director of NLA’s Center for Life Sciences discussed creating a “genetic profile” of Kazakh citizens to help identify predispositions to diseases and contribute to public health protection and domestic medicine development in Kazakhstan.

Furthermore, a presentation was made on an accelerator for research on water purification and hydrogen generation which was created in collaboration with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the United States. Bektenov outlined specific tasks aimed at integrating science and production as well as expanding access to scientific infrastructure for Kazakhstan’s research community.
