Centra Health in Lynchburg has announced a change in leadership, with Richard Tugman being named as the interim president and CEO. Tugman, who has been serving as the CEO of Piedmont Community Health Plan since 2016, previously served as Centra’s interim CEO in 2021.

According to Thomas Nygaard, M.D., Chair of Centra’s Board of Directors, Tugman’s deep understanding of the organization and its people makes him well-suited to lead Centra while a national search for a permanent CEO is conducted. The announcement was made on Thursday, with Nygaard expressing gratitude to Amy Carrier for her contributions to Centra and wishing her success in her future endeavors.

Tugman has willingly taken on the responsibility as interim president and CEO, with a transition committee appointed to advise him in his new role. Centra Health is a subsidiary of Centra, and Tugman’s prior experience with the organization gives the board confidence that he will effectively lead Centra during this transition period. The board looks forward to working with Tugman as they search for a new, permanent CEO to lead the organization in the future.
