The future of transportation is set to bring a new wave of smarter vehicles that can communicate with each other, including self-driving cars. However, this advancement presents new challenges that will require faster, more stable, and safer communication networks to support these vehicles. As a result, it will be vital to construct highways with robust 5G network coverage that can handle high data transmission capacity, low latency, and high reliability of services, especially in scenarios like traffic accidents.
To address these needs, the 5G Adria project was initiated by a consortium of Telemach Slovenia and Croatia, DARS, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana, and the Croatian company OIV. Together they are conducting research to explore and analyze the conditions necessary for establishing 5G infrastructure to enhance mobility and connectivity in Slovenia and Croatia.
During the study, researchers analyzed and aligned passive and active infrastructure with current network capacities to support traffic management along the Mediterranean road corridor. They presented their findings, emphasizing the need for enhanced infrastructure to pave the way for advanced applications and services that will ensure greater efficiency, safety, and communication between autonomous vehicles.
The study laid the groundwork for future networks that will enable advanced applications to improve traffic information management particularly in high-traffic corridors. Through cross-border cooperation and innovation, the 5G Adria project aims to foster technological progress and economic development in the region.
By implementing digital infrastructure enhancements such as 5G Adria project aims to reduce CO2 emissions promoting sustainable development in the region. Moreover by fostering collaboration between partners from Slovenia and Croatia it signifies importance of joint efforts in building connected transport infrastructure that benefits both countries citizens alike.
