Ann Arbor Pioneer distance runner Rachel Forsyth was honored with the prestigious 2024 Courage Award during the Detroit Area High School Sports Awards held on Tuesday night and presented by the Detroit Area Honda Dealers. The U.S. Army, a partnering sponsor of the event, presented the award to recognize qualities such as greatness, strength, and bravery that extend beyond athletic achievements on the field, court, or track.

Forsyth’s impressive senior cross country season included a victory in the Division 1 race where she not only won but also broke the record time. This achievement led her to being named the Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year earlier in the evening. However, her journey to success was not without its challenges.

Over the past few years, Forsyth faced a difficult battle with an eating disorder. Despite this obstacle, with support from friends and family, doctors and most importantly herself, she overcame her struggles and achieved something she once believed was beyond her reach. Her story serves as an inspiration for others proving that with determination and perseverance one can overcome even tough challenges. Her resilience and strength have not only led her to athletic success but also serve as a reminder of self-care and support in adversity.
