In 2022, the average wage in Spain increased by 4.1%, reaching 26,950 euros gross per year. This equates to 1,925 euros in fourteen installments before taxes. Although this increase was welcomed, the gender wage gap persisted, with women earning an average of 24,359 euros compared to men’s 29,381 euros.

According to a Salary Structure Survey published by the INE, men’s salaries increased by an average of 3.5% in 2022, while women’s salaries rose by 5.1%. This helped reduce the gender wage gap from a significant difference of €5,210 to €5,022 euros. Despite this progress towards equality, factors such as job position and seniority still contribute significantly to the wage gap between genders.

One in five Spanish women earned an annual income equal to or less than the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI), which was set at €1,000 in fourteen payments in 2022. This percentage was significantly lower for men, with only 10.3% falling into that category. Women from Latin America earned an average of €18,214 euros annually, which is lower than the average gross salary of €27,500 for Spanish natives.

In terms of job type and education level, directors and managers had the highest average salary at €59,478.63 annually and those with higher education levels earned significantly more than those with lower levels of education. Workers who worked in regions such as Basque Country and Community de Madrid had above-average salaries compared to other regions like Estremadura and Castilla-La Mancha which had below-average salaries on average across all economic activities sectors.
