Robert Persichitti, a 102-year-old US Navy veteran who had served in World War II, passed away last week while on his way to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Despite not being able to make it to Normandy for the ceremonies, Persichitti had been planning his trip for months.

Honor Flight Rochester, a veterans organization that he was a part of, described him as a wonderful and humble person who was easy to talk to. President and CEO Richard Stewart expressed his sadness at the loss of such an important figure and said that they miss him dearly.

Despite his age, Persichitti had been in excellent health until he fell ill while in Germany on his way to Normandy. He was airlifted to the hospital but unfortunately passed away soon after. According to Al DeCarlo, who was traveling with him at the time of his death, Persichitti died peacefully while listening to his favorite singer, Frank Sinatra.

Persichitti’s service during World War II included significant battles at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Guam as a radioman on the USS Eldorado. In recognition of his service, he was inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame in 2020. After the war, he worked as a carpentry teacher in Rochester, New York and even earned a degree from SUNY Buffalo in 1972. His life and service have left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
