Last week, Honor Flight Rochester announced the passing of 102-year-old World War II US Navy veteran Robert Persichitti. This news was shared by the organization, which described Persichitti as a kind and easy-going individual who was well-liked by everyone who knew him.

During his time in the military, Persichitti served aboard the USS Eldorado in the Pacific and participated in important battles such as Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Guam. He was later inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame for his service. While traveling to Normandy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Persichitti fell ill in Germany and was airlifted to a hospital where he passed away shortly after.

Despite having had heart problems in the past, Persichitti was considered to be in excellent health for his age. After returning from war, he went on to work as a carpentry teacher in Rochester before earning a degree from SUNY Buffalo in 1972. Later on, he became known for his passion for traveling and sharing his war experiences with younger generations, often visiting schools to speak with students about World War II.

Pastor William Leone expressed his gratitude for knowing Persichitti and remembered him fondly as a privilege to know. Richard Stewart, President and CEO of Honor Flight Rochester also expressed his sadness at losing such an important figure in their community.
