The Rapid City Sports Commission is hosting a series of ten youth sports tournaments this month, bringing in an estimated $9 million for the local economy. Approximately 8,000 athletes, along with their families and friends, are expected to participate in the various baseball, softball, and soccer tournaments.
Notable events include the BHR Scheels Rushmore Cup, Jim Scull Tournament, and the Rushmore Shootout Baseball Tournament. According to Sports Commission Executive Director Domico Rodriguez, hosting these tournaments is ideal during tourism season as it provides an opportunity to showcase the city’s sports facilities. Athletes can compete closer to home, saving on travel expenses. Rodriguez emphasized that these events benefit the community, athletes and local organizations involved in organizing the tournaments.
Moreover, these tournaments offer a chance to highlight newly constructed or renovated sports facilities in the city such as Sioux Park which completed construction in the spring. This influx of sports events not only boosts the local economy but also enhances the city’s reputation as a sports destination.
